Aerodrome Operations Training Papua New Guinea
for Xstrata Copper
Frieda River Airstrip is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper and is located on the Frieda River mining lease in the Sepik district of Papua New Guinea. It is in a remote and isolated area and is restricted to small aircraft and helicopters. Even though the airstrip is small, the same level of safety is required as for a large airport.
The 4-day training courses were carried out both at the airstrip and at the Xstrata base camp, a 20-minute helicopter flight away. The course was structured to a level that could be understood by local staff working at the airstrip and also the airstrip management group.
The participants included Airfield Operations Officers, aircraft operator groundstaff, aviation contractors and Xstrata’s Mine and Airfield Safety Manager.
The aim of the course was to ensure that local staff would improve the way they carry out daily airfield inspections and maintenance work as well as:
- Increase knowledge and improve work practices so as to minimise aircraft incidents and accidents;
- Comply with applicable and relevant standards and ensure that the airstrip is clear and serviceable at all times, providing a safe and secure environment for all users; and
- Assist aerodrome ground operations staff gain a better understanding of airfield operations and improve the skills necessary to manage safety issues on a daily basis.
